A golf packing list for a weekend away

A golf trip should feel unhurried from the moment you close the bag. Most of the stress people bring on a weekend away is packed at home: too much of the wrong thing, not enough of the right one, and the small item that gets left on the kitchen table and costs a fortune at the resort shop. A little planning fixes all of it.

Here is how we would pack for a two or three day golf weekend.

Plan by rounds, not by days

Count the rounds, not the nights. For each round you want a fresh polo, and for a full day of thirty six holes you may want two. So a three round weekend means three or four polos, plus one spare. That single habit stops you either overpacking a week's worth of clothes or arriving a shirt short.

Choose polos in a breathable knit and in colours that agree with one another, so any shirt works with any trouser or short you bring. A neutral base makes the whole bag more useful and lighter. Our polo shirts are cut to layer cleanly, which matters when the weather turns.

The layers that earn their place

Weather is the thing you cannot control on a trip, so pack for the forecast you might get rather than the one you hope for. Three layers cover almost anything.

A lightweight mid layer or quarter zip for cool mornings and exposed holes. A packable waterproof from our rainwear that lives in the bag whatever the sky is doing. And, if the trip is early or late in the season, a thin base layer that adds real warmth for almost no weight. All three pack flat and none of them restrict a swing.

Below the waist, take one pair of trousers and one or two pairs of shorts in technical fabrics, again in neutrals so they mix with every shirt. A tapered short in a warm-weather cloth is the summer workhorse.

Off the course

The evenings are where people either overpack or underthink. You do not need a separate wardrobe. A good golf polo already works with chinos for dinner, and one of your mid layers doubles as an evening layer. Add one shirt you would happily wear out and a pair of shoes that are not your golf shoes, and you are done. The whole point of buying considered pieces is that they cross over, so a weekend bag stays small.

Protect the clubs in transit

One piece of kit is worth a special mention because replacing it is the most expensive mistake on any trip: your clubs. If you are flying or piling the car high, a padded travel bag is not a luxury. Airlines and boots are unkind to graphite shafts, and a good cover with firm sides and wheels turns a nervous handover into a non-event. Slip a towel or a couple of head covers around the club heads for a little extra insurance, and travel with the round in mind rather than hoping for the best.

The small things that ruin a trip when forgotten

These are the items that cost the most and annoy the most when left behind. Pack them first.

• Spare glove or two, and a rain glove if wet weather is likely. A slick grip loses more shots than anything.
• Fresh golf socks for every round. Damp feet end a good day early.
• A cap for sun and a warmer hat if the trip is cold. Reading greens with a squint is no fun.
• Sun cream, a small towel, tees and more balls than you think you need.
• Chargers for phone, watch and rangefinder, and a spare battery.

A few accessories sorted at home save an expensive dash to the pro shop on the first morning.

Pack light, choose well

The best packed golf bag is not the fullest one. It is the one where every piece works with every other piece, the layers cover the weather you might meet, and nothing important is missing. Count your rounds, keep to a neutral palette, protect against the weather, and remember the small things. Do that and the only decision left on the trip is which tee to play from.
