Dressing for links golf: summer layers that work

There is no golf quite like links golf, and there is no weather quite like it either. A coastal round in high summer can begin still and warm, turn into a stiff breeze by the turn, and finish under a shower that blew in off the sea while you were reading a putt. Dressing for it is a skill of its own.

The mistake is to dress for the forecast. On the coast the forecast is a suggestion. The players who look and feel right all day are the ones who layer properly and carry little. Here is how we would pack the bag for a summer links round.

The forecast lies on the coast

Inland, you can trust the number on the app and dress once. By the sea, wind speed matters more than temperature, and both change fast. A twelve-mile-an-hour breeze on an exposed fairway takes several degrees off a warm morning. Dress for the range of the day, not the moment you leave the house, and build an outfit you can adjust without stopping.

The principle is simple: a few thin layers you can add and shed beat one thick one you are stuck with. Each layer should earn its place in the bag.

Start with a polo you can play in all day

The base of the whole outfit is a good polo in a breathable performance knit. It has to work on its own in the warm spells and sit cleanly under a layer when the wind gets up, so the collar needs to hold its shape either way. Choose a colour from the quiet end of the range: it will pair with everything else you pack.

The mid layer earns its place
